Pantone Color Bridge SetReviewsI was agonizing over which Pantone set to purchase until I realized many of them deal with mixing the ink. Since I don't have to worry about that (and the printers I work with all have their own Pantone mixing books), I could focus on what was most important to me: the Pantone color, number and associated CMYK and RGB values. This set was absolutely perfect for my needs. This is the pantone book that is very important for conversion. It was half the price at Amazon for the same product. I refer to this little guide several times a week. It's built to be durable and is fairly complete (though there are still shades I routinely find it just doesn't match... but then again, this is not as comprehensive a guide as some Pantone systems). If you work with printers or fabricators, this is the color match book of choice as it appears that almost everyone has one. This product is great and a must have if you work with prints and graphics. The only con is the price. This color bridge set gives you the RGB and CMYK composition of all the coated and uncoated Pantone colors. I am a graphic designer and should have purchased this bridge book a long time ago. Colors on different computer monitors can vary tremendously and this alleviates a lot of guesswork. It is also much easier to show clients the difference between spot and Pantone colors instead of just explaining it. Average Rating:![]() |

Because of the difference from color monitor to color print, this has been a great guide for picking a color and using the code to have a job turn out "just right". Like that there are several different guides and the carrying/storage case is a nice extra. As a graphic designer that meets in person with most of my clients, I have found it very beneficial to show up with the tools of the trade. Pantone has gained recognition as the standard for displaying color and insuring that it is accurately reproduced in print. This product gives you six books, an Inspiration Guide, and a carrying case. The carrying case is soft, fits inside my laptop bag, and protects the individual books well with each resting in their own compartment. One big thing that I missed in the products online description is what each book actually contains. I work entirely with the Solid Formulas (PMS 186 for example) and was under the impression that two of the books, for coated and uncoated, would feature the 4-color process builds of the Solid colors displayed on the respective stock. They are instead the Process Guides (the colors with a name like: DS 223-4 C), while still useful, but not what I thought I would be getting. The Color Bridge book does serve the purpose of side-by-side comparison of Solid colors and how closely they can be reproduced using process builds, but only for coated stock. This case is excellent to keep all the catalogues and the price is very attractive as you take 5 catalogues. I am a graphic designer and I think that this is one of the very first investment of any professional. There is just one thing I don't like on 2 of them: 4-Color Process Guide. The guide is very helpfull but would help more if that would have the closest Pantone reference number related with the percentage in CMKY. I miss 2 catalogues: methalic colors and Color Bride uncoated, that I bought separately. Anyway no one of my comments would be anything significant to avoid getting it. I bought and I am very satisfied! Everything was as it should be and we are delighted to have this collection of pantone books. Thank you for making available at Amazon! Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico (DVD)ReviewsIt took a week and a half for it to show up. The tracking # showed it having arrived but it didn't show up for another three days. When it did arrive it was the wrong item. Got an RMA real quick. Bought this map for my Colorado 300. Installation was relatively easy - hardest part was getting the computer to recognize the GPS and the SD card (treats as two separate drives). Once there, downloading into the GPS was easy although it took almost two hours to load the entire map (1.09GB), which amounted to about a tranfer rate of about 165 kB/s; not good at all for USB. However, once downloaded into the GPS and powering it up, the map came up a soon as the GPS got the location; no adjustments were needed. Map is very well detailed and has most of the key points of interest (food, gas, shopping, parks, etc.). Is very easy to use. Does a reasonbly good job of getting you from point A to B, but if you want to avoid a route(s) or add in-between stops, plan to the route on the computer first using MapSource (must buy the DVD version to get this), then download into the GPS. You will not need to buy this product (North America City Navigator) if you have a Nuvi. In spite of minor glitches (few missing POIs and very few outdated names), I have no regrets buying the product. POIs (waypoints) can be added into the GPS and MapSource. After reading the reviews, I knew the installation process was going to be lengthy. Okay, I got that. What I couldn't stand was they had absolutely no tutorial for the product. I consider myself to be somewhat savvy when it comes to figuring out how to work programs, but this was ridiculous. It took hours just to figure out the basics. Maybe they expect you to have already purchased their maps before. Once I have figured out how to navigate my way through the basics, yes they give good directions and are accurate. It's just hard to get past the fact that they told tell you how to use it. As finicky to unlock as previous reviewers have mentioned. I've owned this product fo about a year and get frustrated every time I need to load the interface onto a new PC. So far I've used Apple, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 OS. Each time the unlocking process is frustrating. Installing on the Apple was the easiest. It didn't matter if IE or Mozilla was used as a browser. It didn't matter if I knew my key or used their 'find your key' interface. Even having the correct key produced random results. The Garmin unlock would not work even though it was deemed 'successful' When you go back to the program even after rebooting your PC--the map would still say that it was locked. The only thing that seemed to work was to keep trying and eventually, the unlock would take. Anther frustration with this product, is that I have yet to be able to register it on their website. I have the other Garmin Maps I own registered. But the closest product choice available on their site is this map software in the SD version. This means that I have not been able to upgrade it properly. My attempts to correspond with Garmin were also very frustrating. The map itself worked fine on my eTrex Vista HCx. So no problems with that. One thing I hate in general, is that while I own both the city navigator, topo, and lakes maps, There is no overlay feature (you can't combine maps). On the water I can get only very basic information as to what lies off shore. If I want to know that information, I have to switch out the microSD card containing the lake map with the one storing the 'city navigator map'. And speaking of Maps--be sure to back up your favorite maps. You cannot add to a map. Beware of accidently 'sending' map information to your GPS. You can add waypoints, routes, etc. to what is loaded on your GPS but if you send map information, it will overwrite the one on the GPS. I like Gramin products very much. Have two GPS's and paid good money for them. I bought this map and I was able to use it with only one GPS. Was planning to update my other GPS but Garmin does not allow its use with more than one, and charges full price to update the other unit. I understand limiting the use but, if you own several GPS you should be able to use your DVD map to update your units. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin City Navigator Europe NT for Detailed Maps of Eastern and Western Europe (DVD)ReviewsWhile the process of installation was simple enough, getting the application to actually work on a Nuvi with US maps already installed has so far proved impossible. The instructions provided are entirely inadequate. Just came back from Europe...could not have made the trips around Italy and Monaco without this product....the only problem we had was when we went to install, our Garmin did not have the adequate memory. After holding for Garmin support for 1 hr. (not a very nice customer service rep.), we were told we had to go and buy a memory card ($12)...then no problems. 1. Horrible packaging. Need strong scissors or shears to open. 2. Works with Mac OS X and Windows; archaic Garmin software is not intuitive and difficult but not impossible to use. Not a pleasurable experience (the Map App on my iPhone is much more fun.) 3. This version (City Navigator Europe NT 2010) is up-to-date as of April, 2009. Garmin offers additional updates for only $129 (should be free), which can be done online (I did not bite on this). 4. Make sure you get an SD card to go with this program as you'll need a fair amount of space if you want to download a reasonable sample of maps in preparation for your travels (I would suggest a minimum of 500 mb - more is better). 5. Be prepared to wait. It takes forever (hours) to download content, even with a fast SD card. 6. You have to register your Garmin GPS device online and can only use this map with that device. The digital rights management on this software is onerous and dumb (especially considering what you can get online these days for free!) Once maps installed, unit works with additional maps transparently without problems (may revise when I get back from Europe!) I'm going on a trip to Turkey, and checked out the City Navigator NT Europe information at the Garmin website, which promised detailed maps of major cities and intercity roads. Those are absent from the DVD. The Turkey information is in version 2010.20, and the latest version available on DVD seems to be 2010.10. I had to contact Garmin support and request a download of the update in order to get the advertised maps. Installing the maps from the DVD was straightforward. Installing the maps from the update was not. Bought this disc, jumped hoops to install it, then finally thought I had installed it went on my trip. Could not use it in France because the nuvi 760 could not find the satellite the entire trip which was 4 days then we went to Spain... yeah, it found the satellite but then Barcelona had no streets listed... only streets that it found were 5 miles out of the main Barcelona city... ok lets move on... it was ok for Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba and Madrid... then we went to Italy... well again the city was on the map but not streets were loading... what the f_? It was a complete and utter disappointment. The other problem was the navigation unit has been starting very slowly ever since I loaded the selected cities and countries that we were going to travel. I think it would have been cheaper and more reliable to have bought a new navigation unit already set-up for Europe.... do not recommend this product at all. Oh, did I mention that the Garmin folks were not very helpful when I emailed them about the problems. The product is great for US use other than that it is not. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Italy and Greece (microSD/SD Card)ReviewsIt was great to have a GPS in Italy and the price of the SD card was fine. I was using a Garmin 760 GPS unit that works very well in the US. Nevertheless, I discovered that you should not expect it to work as well as it does with your US map. Too often, I found myself passing the exit before I could identify it from the GPS instructions. Probably, that was sometimes my own fault in trying to understand the mispronounced Italian street names that were identified with too much information--sort of like trying to read the overhead route directions that contained directions to several places, all in a foreign language. The quirkiness of the guidance was annoying. For example, on one occasion I was on on a major road (comparable to an interstate road in the US) and the GPS said to drive on it for 60 miles. I knew that to be correct, having been on the road before. I drove about 10 miles at about 80 miles an hour (yet being passed by the other drivers). Suddenly, the GPS started telling me to "go 500 yards and make a legal U-turn." I knew I had another 50 miles to go so I ignored that instruction (and it was a physical impossibility to make a U-turn on such a road). For another 5 minutes, it kept telling me to make that U-turn, after which it stopped doing so and reflected the fact that I had another 45 miles to go to my destination. Despite these issues, I recommend the SD card for anyone driving in Italy. Overall, it did its job, and if you realize it is quirky, you will be OK. It is not perfect, but it is better than trying to read foreign maps and asking for directions when there is a language barrier. If nothing else, its pronunciation of Italian street names will keep you amused. I bought this for a trip to italy and wish i didnt waste the money. The maps were outdated. It tried sending us on roads that didnt exist and didnt have many of the paved public roads that we were driving on. I just received this product and it took 3 hours to get it to work on a 60csx. The manual consists of 1 3"x 3" page in English of which 1/3 is a warning and 1/3 is a legal disclaimer. I'm still in the States but from what I can see the maps are very good, with plenty of useful POI's. This chip did not work with Garmin Mapsource or Garmin Map installer. Insert the chip into the unit and figure it out from there. Meaning as far as I can tell, no PC tie in. In my opinion Garmin makes the best mapping product on the market. Which is a shame because they are consistently overpriced with minimal support. It takes hours on line to see how useful their products can be. Which can be a little scary when you can't get on line. Great item! I don't know how I would have gotten though Northern Italy without it! I stayed at some smaller hotels on little streets and it was no problem. The only reason I did not give it a five star is because it included no written instructions. It was exactly as expected and helped me get all around Athens. I did not use it around other areas of Greece or at all in Italy (yet). With it's network of roads downtown it was able to get me from point A to point B knowing the one-way streets. The only drawback was that it doesn't react as quickly as I hoped as it has to read from the SD card so there are slight delays. I think it's great because you can go off the beaten path and know you can get to your destination. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin Portable Friction MountReviewsGrips my dash really well. It is a great alternative when you don't want to "stick" the suction cup to the windshield. This nuvi portable mount works great and is pretty stable. The only time I had an issue was taking a curve a bit to fast. This is also easy to hide under my driver seat. Well worth it and much less expensive than the Garmin site even with a 20% discount. Very nice mount. It does move slightly when I am driving on curvy roads, but I am a very spirited driver. I like that is easy to move from car to car. I was a little sceptical of this when we first got it as a gift. It looked to bulky to actually be practical, so we didn't actually use it for a few months. But now after using it for almost a year, my wife and I are very satisfied with the product. We use it in two cars (Honda and Subaru) and and it has worked perfectly every time. No slipping, easy to use, and not as obtrusive as it appears. When not in use, we just stash the beanbag part under the seat or in a door pocket and put the GPS and plastic hardware in the glovebox. Thus, the tell-tale wrings from the windshield mount are gone, and potential thieves are none the wiser. We used this on vacation and it was so nice to put it on the dash. I have a Mini Van and used to put the GPS on the windshield, then to check or change the screen, you have to reach and can be dangerous. This is very convenient when changing the screen, with-in arms reach. Easy to put away and no marks on your windshield. Love it so glad I bought it, you will not regret it. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin 4.3-Inch Carrying CaseReviewsThis case is a good quality case and serves it's purpose well. The only drawback is the Garmin is hard to remove as the fit is quite tight. I am hoping with use it will "loosen" up a bit. This is a simple and attractive carrying case for a Garmin GPS device. The most important thing it does is protect your Garmin. Also the case is easier to hold in your hand than the Garmin itself - fabric over metal. This is a solid value. The case is excellent and should have been included in the in original package with the Garmin 4.3 - inch nativagtor. The product is described as durable leather, and I guess if you want real leather, make sure that it described as genuine leather, otherwise is 'fake' leather. But for the money I guess is O.K. Just received it, so I will see how it hold up. This case is a good fit for the Garmin 1350W. The only drawback is that it has no way to seal it in the case to prevent fallout of the item. really protects the unit from scratches and bumps from carrying it. should last a long time judging by the materials used. Garmin nüvi 205W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorReviewsThis is a great GPS, very easy to use, and works great. It doesn't have all the features of the better models such as the GPS ability to say the street names instead of just saying "turn left", but it was far cheaper than the next model up. I would buy it again. The price is amazing. The item itself was good quality and easy to use. I enjoy the product every much. Received the Garmin 205W a few days later than anticipated. Product performs as indicated. Being a 1st time user, a small instruction book would be a good addition. after playing with the unit a few times one can link to locations and maps without much problem. When errors or mistakes are made the operation is extremely forgiving and easily corrected. Good product for the $$... Highly recommended be this mapping rookie.... It's a good machine. It gets the satellite signal fast and I can even navigate inside my house. :-) A message for Garmin enterprises: Make t possible to sell more detailed map please. Recently I use it for Panama. which is outside Panama City is not a good map. Its all good. I really like it because its functional and really helps a lot. I wish there was a clock somewhere on the screen or as a screen saver for example since i don't have one in my car. But I am happy with it any ways. Average Rating:![]() |

Assorted Neoprene Sleeve Carrying Case for Garmin Nuvi 255W 500 550 900TReviewsGreat product...bought one for each of my sons and one for myself. Looks nice and protects the GPS. These are great value for money. Fits a PND, Battery & cables. I like the green as it stands out from all the black cases. I bought this for my Garmin Nuvi 255W GPS unit, and it is way too big. It is a nice bag, maybe I will find another use for it. Oh, we're darned if we do and darned if we don't. Loose fit or tight fit? Well, the Neoprene Sleeve Carrying Case for the Garmin Nuvi 255W is, in fact, a loose fit. Now, why would that be a problem? Actually it isn't REALLY a problem in terms of function, but a tighter fitting Neoprene cover apparently would make me "feel better" psychologically, about it. Ok, maybe there is a legitimate "protection" reason, i.e. the looser fit allows for shifting of the device within the sleeve, which might make it less safe - from exactly what, I'm not sure. Maybe it's just that it's a waste of fabric. Or, maybe it's that the extra fabric bunches a bit, which makes it more difficult to cram down in your day bag. Positive Features: I think the wrist strap is a plus. I had a case that did not have the wrist strap. This means that to transport the Garmin, you have to pick up the actual Garmin - and the more times you come in contact with it, even through a Neoprene Sleeve, the more likely you are to scratch the screen or the casing. That all being said, I don't recommend habitually twirling the thing around on the wrist strap because 1) you're likely to let it go and break it and 2) you might, very well, wack some unspecting soul in the noggin. The wrist strap is detachable, in case you find it annoying or your find a 6 year old who can't resist swinging the thing around and hitting people in the noggin. Fashion colors are always a nice addition to any of these product lines. You really only need one of these things, so choose wisely. I'm not aware of too many people that try to match their Garmin pouches to their outfits. But hey, if that's your bag... have at it. The zipper is "rubberized" so that it won't scratch up the device if you zip too close. There is a zip pocket on this sleeve, for what, precisely, I'm not sure. The power cord is really a tight squeeze for this pouch, and I have to tell you, while I know the neoprene is a great fabric to protect devices like this, I just don't see the plus side of cramming anything with metal on it inside the pocket of the Sleeve. The pocket isn't a design "flaw" per se - but really, it's unnecessary, in my book. However, (and more on Garmin safety in a moment) I take my Garmin out of my car a lot, especially when I'm in the grocery store. And what do you know, coupons fit in that little pocket. I'm certain it wasn't designed for that, but in case you're trying to figure out what could or should go in there.... how about coupons... or a few dollars....or a torn off return address from an envelope that you're going to plug in to the device. Or many it's a quick tear from a flyer with an address of a store you want to go to. We've used the sleeve with positive results. No scratches or bumps or bruises. I suppose the extra space within the sleeve is nice in that it's easy to get the device in an out. And finally, it's Neoprene. Neoprene is not waterPROOF, but it is waterRESISTANT. So, when you step out of the car and get hit by a sprinkler, you don't ruin your Garmin. Likewise, you're late and running in the rain, probably don't ruin your Garmin. I do not recommend diving in the pool with it in the Neoprene, or allowing it to be used as a bath toy because Neoprene does, in fact, take on water. Not so positive things - There's nothing BAD. Just useless pockets, in my opinion, and a bagginess that's just more of an annoyance than anything else. But at least you can have an apple green annoyance, if you so choose. A NOTE ON SAFETY: Garmins, and all GPS systems, are hot targets for thieves. It literally takes them under 3 seconds to steal yours. They smash your window, grab it, and they are gone. Accordingly, these Neoprene Sleeves are a handy way to keep your Garmin safe, not only from scratches and such, but from thieves -- that is if you will remember to take your Garmin with you when you "exit your vehicle." Likewise, do not leave the mounting bracket on the dash or windshield as this is nothing more than an advertisement to thieves - "Hey, lookie here, there's probably a GPS in this car." I can't tell you the number of people I know who take their Garmins out of their cars but leave the mounting brackets up - only to have their window smashed and then things tossed about in the car because the thief was annoyed that the Garmin wasn't there. Yes, you can lock it in the glove box, but in under 10 seconds, they will smash your window and open the box with a screwdriver. So, TAKE THE GARMIN WITH YOU - and since you should do that, give one of these Neoprene cases a try. It's a good carrying case as there is room for some extras like credit cards, etc. Average Rating:![]() |

Assorted Colors Neoprene Sleeve Carrying Case for TomTom ONE XL and TomTom 330ReviewsBought this case for my Tomtom 330 XL, good fit, not as bright orange as I thought it was going to be. but good enough About a week before I purchased this I came out of work to find my GPS had fallen off the dash and was laying on the floor because the sun softened up the sticky back on the suction cup pad so much. This product was just what I was looking for. It is a perfect storage case for my "TomTom ONE XL S" and it just tucks away in my door compartment staying nice and secure. When I ordered this carrying case, I owned a TomTom. By the time I received the case, I had sent the TomTom back and ordered a Garmen. The case works beautifully for it also. I carry my GPS and my IPod in the two pockets. After having my GPS stolen, I decided to carry the next one with me. I already typically carry a bag with me and didn't want a whole separate one for the GPS, This was inexpensive, pads the unit well and fits inside my bag easily. As a bonus my Ipod Classic fits into the side pocket so now I carry both when I leave (my last Ipod was stolen along with the GPS as well). I am using it with a TomTom 930. The carrying case is prefect and it doesn't look like it has the TomTom in it. That is the most important thing to me. So people don't think I have something on me that they want to steal. It is also very cute and trendy. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorReviewsThe product came in a timely fashion and parts included were just as described. I like the large screen and, if the destination is entered in the GPS, directions are good. However, it seems that many destinations are not in the GPS' database, which is a pain. Also, even though I enter 'the shortest route', it has taken me around a much longer route. It seems to take a really long time to acquire satellites, but I have nothing to compare it. It came with a quick start guide, but no in-depth instructions. As it says, this is my first sojourn into the GPS world, so I don't have anything for comparison. I am overall very pleased with the Garmin, and find t fairly easy to use. I have two wishes for a GPS that has nothing to do with the good productivity of this product. I wish that there was an option to save more than just my one home address, so that I could use several different starting or ending points without having to re-enter the address each time. The other thing which I am certain is standard among all GPS is when you turn the unit on, you have to scan through the "agreement" screens each time before loading the maps. Overall, I would buy this item again or recommend it to anyone! Great product. Blew my wife away. Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal LocatorReviewsWorks great as advertized - this is my second unit - first one is still in use and I didn't want to share -Have used it locally and also while flying (local flying club). Used it for hunting this year in an area I have never been in before and it easily got me and my deer out. Great unit. By the time you make this device find the satalite you will find the car on your own. Not something I would buy again. Bought two, one for me and one as a gift. Too embarresed to give to anyone. I can't believe how easy this thing is to use, and how accurate it is. I tried this thing on several large malls parking lot. After marking where I parked my car and turning the unit off, at some point and time when I was ready to leave I turned on the backtracker to get a satelite signal. After a minute or two I was able to get a signal lock even inside the mall! When I headed back towards my car, the arrow pointed towards where my car is, and the number of distance decreases. Sometimes the arrow didn't point exactly where my car is, instead I looked at the number of distance remaining. As long as the numbers decreases, you know you're getting closer. When I got closer and closer to my car, the arrow pointed more towards my car. Once I'm at my car the 0 appears with all the arrows around the display. The accuratecy of this thing is +- 2 feet! The compass is also accurate as it displays number of degrees in heading. This device is so easy to use and it is the best thing to have to find your car, place of interest in a large, or unknown area. It's also great for knowing where you're heading in compass mode. I was excited to try this product - but when I got it - I was very disappointed - the back cover where the battery is located has a very flaky cover - you dont know if its closed and locked or unlocked. It works fine but I am convinced if you have to interact with the back for battery replacement it will be a goner. I love this product. I bought it for my husband for Christmas and he loves it. Since we have used it on a trip to Florida, just to test it out and he used it on a camping trip with a few of his buddies and is completely satisfied. We plan on using it over the summer on another camping trip and can't wait. I would recommend it for anyone. Neat gadget! And great little tool. Average Rating:![]() |

Brunton Classic CompassReviewsThis seems like a sturdy item, so we purchased it for our newest Boy Scout as part of his Christmas gift. It looks like just what he needs, and we anticipate many yeas of camping and hiking use from it. Will update our review as the item sees more use :o) This is a very nice compass, but I bought it for my 7 year old daughter and it is just too big (about 3"x4"). There is nothing in the description about the size or the fact it contains hazardous chemicals. I tried to return it because I bought something smaller from Amazon and I was told I couldn't return it because it is a HAZMAT item. Shipping wasn't a problem on the way to me. After several calls and being transferred back and forth, I was finally given a credit and told to donate the compass to a worthwhile organization. I just bought it to give my son a sense of how to use a compass while geo-caching and it was serviceable for that. You don't want to give a 10 year old something you really value afterall. hi all got Brunton Classic Compass a few months back. a very decent basic compass for hiking and orienteering,... the dial is clear, the needle stabilizes fast. Only two things bothered me..i had a few friends having a Silva Polaris Base Plate Compass. right at where i need to read my heading ((((the directional arrow coinciding with the azimuth degrees on the rotating dial...they have a small white mark --- an extension of the directional arrow (index pointer) ...just below the transparent dial).))) So if you want to head 140 degrees ON Brunton Classic Compass .you have to keep an eye on the dial and try to line it up to the directional arrow... you will face the same problem WHEN NOT having a sighting and signaling mirror.... if you want to Silva Polaris Base Plate Compass-- the small white mark just below the rotating dial will help you to keep your eye right on the degrees and to stop at 140 degrees the moment it coincides with the directional arrow the other thing is : declination adjustment. i have to do it every time with Brunton Classic Compass....i did not see any adjustable declination. the product feature in amazon said ..adjustable declination. i did not or could not locate any feature like that nor any screw driver type instrument to adjust for declination. i have to do the math in my head everything i wanted to go...i am a statistician and this did not bother me...but the product description on amazon should be changed Excellent basic compass that has every necessary feature. It does not have a sighting mirror, so if you feel that is a requirement, look elsewhere. Very steady needle, declination adjusment, and a greenish base, which you may appreciate if you drop it in the woods. As another reviewer noted, the base is symetrical, but it does have a pointing arrow -- so you shouldn't really have a problem with pointing it the correct direction. If there was one thing I would change, though, it would be to have the 'direction of travel' arrow side of the base longer. Terrific price, too. It would be pretty cheap to buy a spare. This classic, analog compass provides all the information that got explorers around perfectly well for hundreds of years, in a snappy, optic green package. It features 2-degree graduations (the series of degree markings on the azimuth ring used for taking bearings) and adjustable declination (the difference in degrees between magnetic north--the direction the magnetic needle on a compass points--and true or geographical north, which is the direction maps are printed toward... |

Garmin GPSMAP 76 with English and French manual/packagingReviewsI have used and abused this handheld Map 76 for 5 years. It has been onboard with me from alaska to New Zealand. I often crew on lots of other peoples vessels and I am always glad to have this little GPS with me. I have the Blue Chart America CD downloaded with the California to Mexico portion of detailed maps as that is where I usually cruise and they have great detail. The battery life is exceptional although I usually attach it to a cig lighter outlet whenever I can to save batteries. On my Catalina 42 I have a bicycle mount on my Binnacle and a plug that integrates it with power and data to my auto pilot. The little GPS runs the whole boat from that connection to my Raytheon instruments. I also save all my traks and download them to my computer to save information and routes. It is also useful to study races to see where I have called the wrong tactics on the race course. I also own the updated color version of this unit but in reality I prefer the interface and practicality of this Grayscale version. If I had to choose one I would pick the Map76 without the color. You can usually find the BlueChart CD on line for under $100.00 and that is much more valuable than the Color version that cost about a $100.00 more.......begold I haven't seen this written explicitly, anywhere, so here goes: This thing isn't mac compatible. Using a serial to USB converter, and some free software (Garmin software will be no help) you can get to the gps data on windows, but good luck if you're on a mac. Also, it is really hard to create new waypoints on the water. This is because if you try and create a waypoint too close to a known feature (such as a highway, intersection, or BODY OF WATER), the GPS will try and use the center of the feature (or something like that). So, to create waypoints over water, your only solution is to manually enter the lat and long (you can't use the cursor to select a point). The maps are nice, but the user interface is lacking. We travel all over Michigan and visit many lakes and this unit works great after loading the necessary maps, to see where you are. The only problem is when we are looking for a set of GPS coordintes, it is nice to see the compass and the coordinates on the same screen, like the older garmin 12 was able to do. With this unit you cannot get both on the same screen. The compass is on one screen, and you position is on another. If you are looking for an exact spot, it is nice to see your coordintes change and the N S E W heading as you are moving, otherwise you have to guess which way is up, so to speak, especially when you are in a boat moving around quite a bit. Bought this as a back up for a boat. Work good, sometimes seems to be off by more than 100 feet, even when located 5 or more satelites. Good battery life, easy to navigate menus. Manufacturer should provide GPS-to-USB connector, not only to-Serial, which is not common these days, especially on laptops. Once connected to PC and software installed, easy to back up and load maps and routes. We use this GPS on our SeaDoo GTX, and are very satisfield with its performance out on the water. We use the default maps which came with the unit. This product works well, but the default maps are not detailed and key roads are missing and are often mislabelled. Using this product to navigate roads would be awful. However, navigation by water is a little better. Several buoys and markers are correct and are in the expected positions on the map. The features which are the most helpful are 1) the breadcrumb trail which is automatically generated and 2) the backlight LCD screen which was a HUGE help to us on a recent trip (from Pt Judith, RI to Block Island, RI) where we got caught out at sea at dusk. This GPS allowed us to follow our earlier-marked trail, so that even though we were out on the ocean and couldn't see very far, we just followed our trail by GPS and navigated home safely. It's also easy to mark points of interest which is critical to finding your way back to the boat ramp in an unfamiliar place! The item is totally waterproof, and for novice users (like us!), it took about 20 minutes to read through the manual and get up to speed on the key features. It is easy to mark waypoints and good for displaying speeds, time, and the direction we're headed. The item also clearly displays latitude and longitude, so if we had engine problems out on the water, i'm confident we could radio in our position from the GPS and get picked up rather easily. I wish the screen was a little more resolute. We often have to stop the jetski to take a look at this GPS to figure out where we are and where we are headed, but it's a small price to pay for having the piece of mind out on the water. About the size of a small, flat calculator, the Garmin GPSMAP 76 is a 12-parallel-channel, WAAS-enabled global positioning system GPS receiver that will go anywhere. Even with its compact style, this GPS unit boasts an extra-large display for showing more map data and the same power you've come to expect from Garmin handhelds--even while operating for up to 16 hours on two AA batteries... |
