Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorReviewsI enjoyed this little GPS. It was easy to assemble, easy to operate and very reliable. I kept it in my vehicle. When I went on a recent road trip, however, the GPS wouldn't start up. I've tried charging it but it just remains a blank, dark screen. Bummer. The GPS is good, but I received an error when I tried put other map. To preface, I never abused any of the units I owned, never left them in the car to experience extreme temperatures, and always handled them carefully. I purchased my first Magellan Roadmate 1412 at Costco in 2008, and despite being straight out of the package, the unit would not charge. I brought it back and received a replacement: unit number 2. The GPS initially worked, despite buggy screen problems, until a few months later when the unit failed to charge again. When resetting the unit didn't work, I called customer assistance who sent a replacement charger cable in case that was the issue. The unit still failed to power up so I sent it in to be serviced. The unit came back, worked for a month, then failed to charge again. I called to complain and was told to send in the unit for a complete replacement, and received my 3rd Roadmate 1412 unit. I thought I finally had a good unit since there were no problems with it at first, until the unit once again failed to charge. Unfortunately by the time this unit broke, it was no longer under warranty, since replacements do not come with a new one year coverage term. Before you buy, you may want to know that map updates are available (if necessary) for free during the first 30 days after purchase. After that, map updates are $75, which seems high. That is almost the current cost of the GPS new. I had to update it as soon as I bought it and customer service was excellent. They sent me a SD card with the update and I received it 4 days after I called. To do the update, you have to update the firmware first. If not, the update will not work and you will need help. You update it by downloading the firmware update file from their web site, then connect the GPS to your USB port and withing a few minutes, it is done. You can do that before you get the SD map update. When you get the SD card, just insert it, push the reset button, and you are updated. I does a good job of receiving the GPS signals and does an OK job of selecting routes. It does not have a lot of the bells and whistles of some other GPS systems, but it seems to be reliable and works well for the price. I was just wondering if this will work outdoors, in the wilderness. If it can track rivers, lakes and bays? We were caught out in a snow storm/white out and it would be helpful to have a gps. Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)ReviewsI found this product easy to use. The spoken instructions are clear, display is good as well. Few shortcomings that I found are : 1) When you miss the street, it does not say 're-calculating'. It automatically computes the new route ..so you don't come to know instantly if you missed it or not. 2) It sometimes gives wrong directions escpecially in the city / downtown area. It tells you to take left turn when there is no road on the left side. However, this product is good when using freeways/ highways. Apart from the above 2 issues, I found this product to be good. I took it out of the box and it never worked. The seller handled everything exceptionally well. Earlier this year, was on the west coast. my niece has a magellan and we used it to get around and to visit points of interest. very impressed with it. looked over the models and picked this one. enjoying it. It has everything i wanted, it's very simple and easy to use. I couldn't have gotten a better deal! I purchased a refurbished item that went on the fritz just 2 days after purchase which tells me that the manufacturer does not test it properly before resale. The new unit I bought works very well. It is a great value for the money and a recommended buy for soemone who just needs to get where they are going and not worried about all the bells and whistles. Average Rating:![]() |
